Being a Scientist

After our great lesson with Julie from Science Alive, Alfie went home and tried being a scientist himself.

Here is a photo of him testing his air pressure experiment.

Do this experiment,

Fill a jar to the top with water.
Place a piece of card or plastic on top.
Turn the jar upside down

What happens?
Can you explain why?

Kites

Today we have been talking about kites.

Emilia had made a kite before so we talked about what a kite needs.

Lachlan knew that a kite has a string that unrolls.
Alfie thought that a kite might be made of paper.

We watched a video of the New Brighton Kite Festival.

Below are our responses to the question;  How does a kite fly?

The string holds it up and the wind holds it. - Eliott

The air floats past the kite and the kite flies through the sky. - Orla

The kite flies with the air moving past the kite.  The air moves the kite up and down. - Alfie

The kite gets taken up by the air and it drift.   If there was no air it would fall. - Lucy-Rose.

We are looking forward to finding out more about kites.

Reading

Today the butterflies read a book about making music. They found out about instruments that have strings and ones that need air.
Then they watched the London Orchestra perform. They spotted lots of the instruments that they had read about.

Pete the cat

We have been drawing our new favourite character Pete the Cat.

Library Visitors

This morning Sam and Rachel came to visit us from the Christchurch City Library.

They read us some stories and played some games with us.

We liked the non fiction story called "Birds of a Feather" and the picture book, "count the monkeys" which was a very funny book. Sam read it really well.

They talked to us about how we can join the library for free.

At the end Eliott, Alexander, Kate and Maitreya joined in to help tell a story about NZ.

We had help too, by saying "No, no, no, no don't pick me, I don't want to save the trees."
